What are Pantelleria’s “lance” boats?
Lance boats are small, traditional wooden vessels handcrafted by the island’s last remaining boatbuilders, using ancient techniques passed down through generations.
They were originally built out of necessity—to move goods between coastal spots before the island had a proper port—later evolving into fishing boats and, eventually, symbols of traditional sailing.
Measuring up to 5.2 meters, equipped with a single mast and no motor, these boats are light, fast, and elegant—but they demand skill. Sailing one is all about the sensitivity of the helmsman and the coordination of the crew.
What makes them unique?
Built with tough, local woods like mulberry and pine, lance boats have a compact hull, elegant volume, and a triangular lateen sail for propulsion.
They feature a movable rudder and interchangeable sails designed to handle light, moderate, or strong winds.
Every element is tailored to Pantelleria’s sea—unpredictable, raw, and never forgiving.
How are they used today?
Today, lance boats don’t carry cargo—they carry emotion. They’re at the heart of a full regatta season, organized by the Pantelleria Sailing Club and the Local Boatowners’ Association.
From June to November, events like the Challenge Trophy—dedicated to master boatbuilder Francesco Valenza—see these elegant vessels glide along the coast like floating parades.
Each regatta is a celebration: a spectacle from land and a thrill from sea.
Can you sail one?
Yes. On Vela Day (June 1–2) and during summer activities, you can step aboard and experience sailing firsthand.
Each outing has at least three crew members, often led by young sailors in training. Tourists, school groups, and curious visitors are welcome—it takes nothing but an open mind and a willingness to learn.
Where can you find them?
The boats are moored in the port of Pantelleria, beneath the old castle, right in front of the Sailing Club. There, among pulleys, colorful hulls, and coils of rope, they rest—waiting for the next breeze.
And what about sustainability?
Sailing a lance boat is an act of respect: no engine, no trace. The local Sailing Club champions eco-initiatives—plastic cleanup, youth education, and marine conservation. Every outing is a chance to teach, and to sail with purpose.
Pantelleria holds centuries of maritime tradition—and lance boats are among its most treasured symbols.
