3 trails on Mount Gibéle
Mount Gibéle is the highest peak on Pantelleria, located in the heart of the national park, rising 680 metres above sea level. It resembles a silent giant, majestically watching over the land. Once an active volcano, today a lunar-like landscape, it’s a beloved destination for travellers and hikers.
The island offers several routes to explore Gibéle, but here we recommend 3 different trails, each offering a unique perspective—from the gentlest to the most challenging. All hikes start from Rekhále, the island’s largest district and agricultural hub.
Step onto the trail and get up close with Pantelleria’s sleeping volcano.
1. The direct route to Mount Gibéle
A short but intense trail, ideal for those who want to touch the soul of the volcano without too much effort. Begin at Favara Grande, where the earth breathes through dark fissures, releasing strong jets of steam at 100°C. From there, follow the path to the summit of Mount Gibéle, where you’ll enjoy blue views of the sea and green landscapes inside the ancient crater, now blooming with life. Today, the caldera is completely covered with holm oaks, centuries-old trees, and a fragrant undergrowth of heather, myrtle and strawberry tree.
The trail ends by retracing your steps, offering the same wild scenery—only downhill.
2. The twin peaks loop
This route connects Mount Gibéle and Montagna Grande in an exclusive trekking itinerary.
A longer and more demanding trail, but a truly rewarding one. It also includes a chance to observe the geothermal activity of Favara Grande.
Once on Gibéle, walk along the rim of the extinct crater and take in the breathtaking views of the Ghirlanda valley. On clear, sunny days, you can even spot the silhouette of the African coast in the distance.
As you approach Montagna Grande, the landscape changes: the forest becomes shadier, and the vapours from new geothermal vents create a surreal and magical atmosphere.
3. Favara to Montagna Grande
Perfect for the most daring hikers, this trail turns any traveller into a true explorer.
The path offers a sequence of panoramic ridgelines, volcanic terrain and alpine-like sections, with a total elevation gain of 610 metres. As with the previous routes, the geothermal field of Favara Grande marks the start of the journey, with sweeping views across Mount Gibéle.
At 836 metres above sea level, Montagna Grande also features a symbolic landmark at its summit: the Antenna Grande.
From up here, you don’t just admire Pantelleria—you feel it. You breathe it in and sense the raw power of nature.
When we travel, what fascinates us isn’t just the beauty of a place, but the emotions it stirs, that spark that makes us feel alive.
Mount Gibéle is a refuge for those seeking authentic outdoor trekking, and a place of reflection for those who move at nature’s pace.
