Located in the Khamma district, the Church of San Francesco was constructed between 1747 and 1767 on the site of an earlier rural chapel. Dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi, the church celebrates its patronal feast on October 4th. This church exemplifies the classic rural Pantellerian ecclesiastical architecture: a single nave built with continuous load-bearing masonry, squared at the corners and irregular elsewhere. The barrel-vaulted ceiling is waterproofed with a mixture of volcanic lapilli—locally known as tuffu—and lime, laid over compacted earth and compressed using wooden mallets. Inside, the church houses two side chapels: one dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes, featuring a statue from 1911, and the other to the Holy Crucifix, with a plaster crucifix donated by the Diocesan Curia in 1859. Additional statues within the church include those of Saint Francis, Saint Joseph, and Our Lady of Sorrows.
