Church of San Gaetano

Scauri - Piazza San Gaetano

View on Google Maps

Situated in the Scauri district, the Church of San Gaetano is dedicated to Saint Gaetano of Thiene, whose feast day is celebrated on August 7th. This church is a notable example of modern ecclesiastical architecture on the island, differing from the traditional rural churches. The earliest documented references to the building date back to 1822, and it became a parish in 1885. This typology is unique on the island. The church features a three-nave layout with vaulted ceilings. Inside, it houses five altars and several statues: Saint Gaetano and Saint Joseph in wood, the Immaculate Conception in plaster, and Our Lady of Sorrows in Roman cardboard. The baptismal font dates back to 1866. Prior to World War II, a rectory was constructed adjacent to the church.
