The Favare are natural jets of steam that escape from fissures in the rock, sometimes accompanied by gases such as sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide. The steam, which can reach 100 °C, alters the surrounding rocks, coloring them brick red. At the Favara Grande, farmers have used reeds and branches to encourage condensation, collecting the water in stone basins to water their animals. The trail, scenic but demanding, starts from the road between Rekale and Serraglia and crosses a geothermal landscape unique on the island.
